[473] "Attached is a photo of the kanji [久誓 - tmc] for Kyusei. At the jukai ceremony of 2006, the preceptor, John Daido Loori stated that my dharma name of Kyusei means "Endless Vow." However, as a note of caution, Daido Roshi was thoroughly American, and although he was a highly motivated, energetic student of kanji, his grasp of kanji was necessarily colored by being a native English speaker. Years later, at Toshoji, a Soto monastery in Okayama Prefecture, the abbot of that training monastery told me that Kyusei does not mean "Endless Vow." However, the actual meaning [= "long time, old story" + "vow, swear, pledge" - tmc] was not supplied to me at that time", Paula Bakule, email, 24 Nov 2023.

[488] "Dear Dr. Ciolek,[...] As to [my] teaching name, it's "Intimate : Ocean" thank you for asking, and I'd be delighted to have that information on the appropriate page. If you prefer, you can eliminate the punctuation-- the " : " gesture. The oddly spaced colon is something my teacher Joan Sutherland often makes use of, and it has added resonance for me because it derives from the poet Charles Olson and the projective verse tradition in American experimental poetry. The name itself is one possible translation of Baizhang's name, Huai Hai [懷海 - tmc]. [...]" Tenney Nathanson, email, 24 Dec 2023.

[494] "Hi Matthew, I can't vouch that this [list of religious names & their meanings of 88 Dharma predecessors in India, China and Japan of Daidō Hōgen roshi - tmc] is error-free, but if you're happy to take it on an 'as-is' basis, here it is. In the past I tried to have a few people check it, but the task maybe was too daunting.
I notice that some of the early Sanskrit names in the [attached] spreadsheet have been corrupted, perhaps as a result of going through successive versions of Excel. I'll get around to correcting that some day, but not now.
I've also included modern Chinese Chan master Sheng Yen's (January 22, 1931 February 3, 2009) lineages. I can't remember where I got this, but I think it was from a site connected with his Dharma Drum school. I have been to many of his and Guo Ru's (his first Dharma successor) retreats over the years. Interestingly (to me anyway) Sheng Yen studied with Ban Tetsugyu Roshi during the time of his doctrinal studies in Japan (1969 - 1975). Ban Tetsugyu was, as you know, a Dharma heir of Harada Sogaku. Sheng Yen's integration of huatou (koan) and silent illumination (shikantaza) practices has been linked by one of his students to this connection with Ban Tetsugyu."

[555]"Dear Dr T. Matthew Ciolek, Long ago - in 2010 - I received Jukai - given to me by Dennis Genpo Merzel then Roshi. I received the Zen dharma name Yuman said to mean Relaxed completely. Please see attached.
Since then I wonder from time to time if my interpretation of the name is correct: Should the fourth letter in Yuman be an e instead of an a. Furthermore I am missing context and can not find a connection between the dharma name and the meaning given: relaxed completely.
If you could shed some light on this matter it would be great. Kind regards Eef Yuman Heinhuis", email, 22 Mar 2024.

Also, it appears on 27 Mar 2024 that Ezra Bayda has misspelt HASHIMOTO'S name/nickname. The correct spelling (see https://www.nagaragawagarou.com/sakuhin/dokuzan-e118.html) is "Gengi" 玄義. GEN = "mysterious; occultness" + GI = "righteousness; justice; morality; honor; loyalty; meaning"
