The Catalogue's Size and Structure
This edition contains information about 370
variant names of 328 architectural structures associated with trade routes in Asia, Europe and Africa.
The Catalogue attempts to collate, from a wide range of sources, verifiable information on thirteen variables:
(1) facility's VARIANT NAME;
(2) facility's STANDARD NAME;
(3) facility's TYPE (eg. a bridge, market place, fort, etc.);
(4) facility's DATE of construction;
(5) standard geographical name of facility's geographical LOCATION
(6) the ISO 3666
code of the modern COUNTRY in which the facility in question is situated (e.g. IR = Iran; SY = Syria; TR = Turkey, and so forth);
(7) decimal LONGITUDE values;
(8) decimal LATITUDE values;
(9) PRECISION of the collected LONG/LAT values;
(10) CORRESPONDENCE between the facility's NAME and its geographical LOCATION;
(11) PRECISION with which the facility's function has been identified;
(12) electronic or paper SOURCE of the facility's VARIANT NAME. (Section below on "Geographic Names & Coordinates" enumerates sources used to determine the long/lat values listed in this catalogue).
(13) unique OWTRAD ID NO. assigned to the facility in question.
The catalogue deals with structures built in various parts of the Old World since the antiquity till the introduction of steam-engine technologies.
All values, including construction date and long/lat coordinates, which currently are left undefined, will be gradually researched and published in the subsequent editions of this Catalogue.
Glossary of Terms
Key terms used in this Catalogue are defined in a separate (since Nov 2006) document entitled A Trade Routes' Glossary: Architectural, Geographical, and Historical Terms Relating to Long Distance Trade, Communication and Pilgrimage Routes.
